Brexit Irony on the 4th

Through the devastation and gloom of the Brexit vote, especially amongst my London based friends, I've been secretly entertained by a childish thought. How ironic, that Britain, the great colonizer, the empire on whom the sun never set, now chafed under the "control" of a foreign power. Especially on the 4th, this struck me funny, that over 240 years later, the British felt compelled to cut ties to an institution far more beneficial, malleable, and egalitarian than the colonial rule they imposed on half the world. I'm curious to see how Britain finds itself in the coming years now that it's nationalism has clipped it's strongest ties to the european economic powerbase.
